How do you translate “philotimo”?
The dictionary just tells us what we already know — that it is a Greek noun translating roughly as “love of honor”, that is nonetheless “almost impossible to translate sufficiently as it describes a complex array of virtues”.
I’d say philotimo is all about being honorable, taking pride in your work, and not allowing yourself to let others down.
All of which are global sentiments, and inherently tied with being an entrepreneur.
Case in point, today’s (May 27th) event, titled “Philotimo and entrepreneurship”, and organized by the Youth Entrepreneurship union (NEA.EP.).
The event, which will take place at the EBEA conference room (Akadimias 7, Athens), will examine the role of “philotimo” (honor, sense of duty, etc.) in entrepreneurship.
Speakers include Paulos Eumorfidis, founder of Coco-Mat Greece (who recently gave a very thought provoking talk at our premises too), Natasha Athanasiadou, founder of Generation Generous, Antonios Koliadis, economist and business consultant and Manos Hatzimalonas, psychologist and founder of the social innovation organization “Philotimo Foundation).
The keynote speeches will be followed by a networking event.
Entrance fee: €20 for non members, €10 for students, free for those with an unemployed card. Price includes complimentary food and drink.
